Sheilas Character Developement throughout the course of An Inspector C
Sheilas Character Developement throughout the course of An inspector Calls by J.B PriestleyIn this essay I am going to be describing how the character of Sheiladevelops throughout An Inspector Calls by J.B Priestley. Priestleywas an English writer, who was born in Bradford. He served in theinfantry during world war one, then afterwards attended CambridgeUniversity. As a paper essayist and journalist, he wrote on avariety of subjects, then the publication of The Good Companions in1929 led to his establishment as a writer. At the first gear of the play, Sheila seems to be fairly naive and actslike a younger girl.We see this when she talks to Gerald about the previous summer and hisdissappearance. When Gerald explains that he was awfully busy at theworks all that time, we see that Gerald finds Sheila to be naive inthat she believes Gerald was really working for all that time. We alsosee that Sheila is possesive of Gerald when she says that she wouldhate for him to become an respectab le on port like one of those purplefaced old men.Sheilas relationship with Eric is completely divergent, and we seethat they are always arguing with severally other or calling each othernames. For example when Eric lets out the laugh during the dinnerparty, Sheila calls him squiffy, or later on when she says Dont bean ass, Eric. This seems to be a petty sibling rivalry.Sheila appears to get on very well with Mrs birle. There never seemsto be any aggression between the two, just complaisant conversation. Also,Sheila seems to agree with her mother most of the time , which we seewhen Mrs Birling objects to her husband talking about work, Sheilasays Neither do I. All wrong.Sheila seems to have a different relationship wit... ....Through the course of the play Sheila slowly changes from a spoiltlittle rich snob into a mature young lady. She begins to share theinspectors views on Edwardian society and brings about a few of herown views. The purpose of Priestly writing An Inspector Call s was to get hisviews about Edwardian society crossways England. Using the inspector hecriticizesThe social order of Edwardian society. So any comment make by theinspector is a comment made by JB Priestly.ConclusionI have been able to successfully answer the essay question usingSheila Birling as my character to show how members of the Birlingfamily changed. JB Priestly reveals the injustice that occurred inEdwardian society. He shows the audience that the upper class peopleof Edwardian society were consequently not the respectable perpendicularcitizens that their class positions would have implied.
